4 Quick Tips to Get Your System Ready for Colder Weather

Fall is here, and Winter is quickly approaching! It’s important to be proactive in preparation for this year’s cold weather. By following the 4 tips in this post, you’ll be ready for the freezing temperatures BEFORE they arrive.

It’s easy to avoid thinking about your home’s heating system during the warmer months of early Fall. The weather is beautiful outside, and it’s a great opportunity to open up your home and enjoy the fresh air. However, once the temperatures begin to drop, our first thought is to kick on the heater. If you have waited until now, there’s a small chance that the heater might have issues. For example, your heater could fail to turn on, or it could blow cool air instead of warm air.

To minimize the risk of an improperly functioning heater when the temperatures drop, take caution by following these 4 quick tips to get your HVAC ready for colder weather.

1. Give the heater a test run

Don’t wait until it’s freezing outside to turn on your heater. It’s possible that something could have gone wrong over the months while it was not in use. Avoid the chance of suffering from a system malfunction by testing your unit when it’s still warm or cool outside. Switch your system from “cooling” to “heating” when you’re ready for the testing process. Once the unit kicks on, you should begin to feel warm air coming out within the first few minutes. If there’s no air coming out, the air doesn’t feel warm, or you hear strange noises, you should turn off your system immediately.

If you notice any of the above warning signs or suspect any other abnormality that may indicate that something is wrong, contact a Prime Comfort HVAC professional. Leaving your system on when it’s not working properly wastes energy and can cause serious damage.

2. Schedule annual pre-season tune-up

Pre-season tune-ups are quite possibly one of the most undervalued, overlooked offerings in the HVAC industry. People often feel as if they shouldn’t worry about their HVAC system if it’s still functioning. Much in the same way that you change your oil regularly in your car, you should have your HVAC unit serviced regularly. Just like your car, an HVAC unit is a very complex machine that requires regular maintenance to ensure efficient function. Subscribe to one of Prime Comfort's maintenance plans to minimize the risk of repairs and to improve system efficiency for every season of the year.

3. Check your air filters

Air filters should regularly be changed throughout the year, with more frequency during colder seasons. The benefits of doing so are also undeniable: you can save up to 15% your energy bill just by replacing a dirty filter! However, not all filters are created equal. Some are thicker than others, making it more effective at filtering the air in your home and eliminating pollutants. Different households will have different requirements for filters. Some homes will have more dander or dust, meaning it should be changed more often. Bottom line: A home with pets should change their filter every 2 months. No pets? You can comfortably go up to 3 months without worrying about your filter.

4. Seal air leaks

Leaks in HVAC system’s ductwork is a major problem striking the homes and businesses across the United States. On average, 30 percent of heating and cooling costs are wasted due to leaks in the air ducts.

In order to combat this problem, Prime Comfort offers duct sealing services that deliver a noticeable difference in in-home comfort and savings on the monthly energy bill. Check out our indoor air quality page for more information on duct sealing services.
