Common AC Problems & How to Troubleshoot

Is your home’s central air conditioner not cooling your house? Perhaps it’s blowing warm or even hot air. There are a number of things that could cause your AC to not cool your home properly. In this month’s blog post, we’re highlighting the problems you can solve and the ones that need to be solved by a professional HVAC technician.

3 Common Problems You Can Solve

1. Thermostat set to “ON” instead of “AUTO”

Does your AC blow out cool air sometimes and warm air other times? The fix may be easier than you think! The fan setting may be set to “ON,” which just runs the fan 24/7—even when the air isn’t being cooled.

We don’t recommend doing this. It consumes a lot of energy and is wasteful. If you want the air to move throughout your home, use fans to keep the air flowing without having to run the central air. This solution to this problem is simply to set the thermostat to “AUTO.”

2. Dirty air filter

Air filters should be changed every month. However, it’s very common and understandable to forget to change them. Not replacing the filter can cause a buildup of dirt, dust, pollen, and other air pollutants that are constantly cycled through your system and reduce airflow into your AC.

This causes several problems. When the filter is dirty, the AC struggles to circulate enough cool air to get your home to the desired temperature. This can keep your home from getting to the desired temperature on your thermostat. Another issue is that it negatively impacts your indoor air quality, which can put your family’s health at risk.

The fix to this one is simple! Check the air filter regularly, and change it if it looks dirty. If you aren’t familiar with how to change your air filter, give us a call for some help! (704) 844-2665.

3. Dirty outside unit

The air conditioner’s indoor unit and outdoor unit need adequate room to breathe. Both depend on a good amount of airflow to function properly and efficiently. If the condenser is crowded with debris, it can’t dissipate heat. This causes your air conditioner to struggle to cool your home.

Keep the outside unit clean of weeds, leaves, and other debris. Give it at least a few feet of room from shrubs, bushes, and other plants. Proper airflow is important for energy efficiency and for avoiding preventable problems.

Remove any weeds growing around the AC unit. Be sure to keep grass clippings from blowing directly onto the unit. Always give it it some room to breathe!

3 Common Problems an AC Professional Needs to Solve

1. A faulty or broken condenser fan motor

If the fan motor is bad, then the outdoor unit’s fan can’t help dissipate heat, meaning that the AC can’t cool your house. There's nothing you can do at this point besides call us!

Our professional technicians will show up and diagnose the problem quickly. We offer upfront, transparent pricing on repairs.

2. Low refrigerant charge

Refrigerant is the liquid that absorbs the heat from your air. When you don’t have enough, your AC can’t absorb enough heat to cool the air.

Signs you have a refrigerant leak include:

  1. Ice buildup on the refrigerant line and the outside unit
  2. Bubbling or hissing noise
  3. AC can’t cool home on especially hot days, but cools fine on cool days and at night

If you notice these signs, turn off your AC and call Prime Comfort ASAP. Running the AC in this state can cause damage to the compressor and damage it beyond repair.

3. A bad compressor

The compressor circulates refrigerant between the inside and outside unit. If it’s damaged, then the AC can’t cool your air. If there’s an issue with the compressor, then it may need replacing. We can help you figure out your options. Just give us a call.
