5 Tips to Prepare Your AC for Summer

Get ready for the summer heat with these 5 simple, energy-saving tips from your trusted, local HVAC experts.

Summer’s just around the corner, and that means fun vacations, beautiful days in the park, and great times with friends and family. Although your AC unit may seem like an afterthought, homeowners across Charlotte should be making sure their air conditioners are ready for the blazing heat!

Today, we’re sharing 5 tips for making sure your AC is ready for summer and how you can save money on cooling costs throughout the hottest months of the year.

1. Clear away any debris.

Make sure your outdoor air conditioning unit can breathe! Your unit should always have clear access to open air, so cut back any shrubs or branches or that might be in the way. If a unit struggles to get open air, it'll force the system to work harder, which will drive up energy costs and put more wear and tear on the unit.

Generally, you want to keep plants, shrubs, and other landscaping about 2 to 4 feet away from your outdoor unit to ensure adequate airflow. Also, be sure that grass clippings are blown away from your unit when mowing the lawn.

2. Check your filters.

Check the air filter once a month and replace it as needed. We can’t stress this enough, especially during the summer when dust and allergens circulate a lot. When air filters become clogged with contaminants, your system has to work harder to supply the same amount of cool air.

Replacing air filters is one of the easiest, most effective methods of conserving energy in the summer. Just like changing the oil in your car, it's a critical step in maintaining your system's long-term health. If you aren’t sure how to change your filters yourself, you can always ask us for a help.

3. Get a programmable thermostat.

A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week. If it’s hard to remember to adjust your thermostat before you leave for work, consider investing in one -- it will save money and energy, especially in the long run.

Did you know? Each degree you drop your AC below 78 increases your energy consumption by roughly 6 to 8 percent. Keeping the temperature higher when you aren't at home is an easy way to save.

4. Seal windows and door frames.

You want your cold air to stay in and the hot air to stay out. Don’t cool the neighborhood; taking some basic weatherization steps can prevent cold air from escaping your home. Weather-stripping and caulking are some simple ways to weatherize windows and door frames.

5. Consult a professional.

Preventative maintenance plays a big role in not only keeping your AC efficient but also in determining how long the unit will last. Keeping up with maintenance saves money, reduces the risk of unexpected outages, and allows you to get the most out of your investment. AC maintenance should always be done by licensed, trusted professionals.

However, you may find your old air conditioner is no longer efficient. Consider replacing your unit with an energy-efficient model, which can also lead to major savings. Click here to take advantage of our Cash for Clunkers special -- trade in your old system for cash back on a new system!
